White has three pawns for a knight, and conceives of the plan of pushing the kingside pawns up together as far as they can go.

1. Be3

The alternative 1. Bg3 doesn’t fit in with the plan, since it blocks the g-pawn.

1. Rad8

Black looks for counterplay in the center.

2. f4 Kg8 3. Rf1 h5

Now Black slows up the pawn advance.

4. g3

The move 4. h3 destroys White’s whole plan after 4. h4.

4. g6 5. h3 Rd3 6. Kg2 b5 7. g4 a5

Black is now countering White’s plan with a minority attack.

8. f5 gxf5 9. gxf5
